Is it really necessary to pull up the T&G boards and replace with ply, or can the tray be bedded directly onto the T&G boards? The instructions also refer to a "tiling upstand". What's that?

Forget PVA, we've never used it & not known a tray fail or become unstuck. As for the weight, lay a good bed onto the ply 10-15mm thick, get a pal to help you lift it & plonk it onto the cement bed.
